LIVING ON THE EDGE
A two tonne boulder sits on the arch overlooking the gully. This is the edge of the great Sydney sandstone basin which stretches from Wollongong to Newcastle. Below (where we live) lay older Permian rocks containing the coal measures.
This formation is part of the escarpment containing galleries and caves formed by millions of years of erosion. The arch probably started as an overhang, then a cave with the roof finally falling in forming an arch.
Its fun to walk out to the boulder but how much more weight can it take?
